In a first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The young political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
