An Iconic Home Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors after the post-war period. "The choice rested on our family's safety and the importance of directing my full attention on carrying out the agenda for affordability voters voted for," stated Mamdani in his announcement. Leaving Astoria Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district famous for its abundance of immigrant communities and global cuisine. "To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for showing us what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said. "Although my address will change in the neighborhood, the community will continue to reside within me and my work," he said. Campaign Controversy In his election campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant. Yet his rivals, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit even though he is from a prominent family. A House Not Always Used Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
