The Showrunner Discloses He Knows How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... For Now.

The creative mastermind could not have predicted that Pluribus would become a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

With the first season of the acclaimed program reaching its finale—and Season 2 already in development—the writers' room opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.

On the Tremendous Viewer Reception

It would be easy to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. He is doing his best to steer clear of all that.

“It's like being an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's amazing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by audience chatter.”

“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.

A Pressing Query: Will the creator Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?

So if the writers aren’t being guided by audience theories, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… with some caveats.

“There are some potential directions about where the show might end up,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a good idea for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

Then again, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.

“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Of course, one could always use the legendary finales?

“I want Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV.
