The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian chief selector Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.
Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.
"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, not only his injury, but additional elements," he commented.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."
Previous Setbacks
The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.
There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.
Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.
Backup Options
In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."
"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
