The pace bowler added to the injury concerns plaguing England after leaving the playing area early on day two of the Boxing Day Test in the Ashes series. Atkinson experienced discomfort in his left leg immediately following a delivery in his spell on Saturday. The England team stated Atkinson reported "discomfort" and would spend time on the sidelines for further assessment "during the day". The series decider of the series at the SCG gets underway this coming Sunday. England have been without fast bowlers Mark Wood due to knee trouble and Jofra Archer to a side strain during this series. Matthew Fisher was called up as cover for Wood. His form was underwhelming in the opening two Tests, taking just three wickets. He was dropped for the Adelaide match, only to be brought back for the Melbourne Test as Archer's replacement. The county bowler showed better form in Melbourne, taking two wickets with the ball, before adding 28 as a batsman among just a trio of English batsmen to reach double figures. Post a single over in Australia's second innings, he returned on Saturday morning and dismissed the nightwatchman taken by the wicketkeeper. Unfortunately, towards the conclusion of his spell, he delivered a slower ball to the batsman and promptly felt his left hamstring. Atkinson was recalled for the fourth Ashes Test having missed of the third.
