A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its role in national infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these national projects.
