Jailhouse Surprise: The FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Faces Life in Prison

He contested the legal system and the legal system triumphed.

A couple of months following receiving a quarter-century plus sentence for trying to “annihilate” Brazil’s political system, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro now seems headed to prison.

Anticipated Imprisonment

The adjudicated instigator – who had been living under residential detention in his residence while a series of judicial steps and appeals proceed – is largely predicted to be jailed in the next few days, during increasing speculation that he will be moved to a well-known maximum security penitentiary.

Past Remarks on Prisoners

Throughout Bolsonaro’s long public life, the far-right former paratrooper showed minimal sympathy for the country's jailed individuals.

“Why should we provide these dirtbags a comfortable existence?” he once pondered. “They deserve to be messed, full-fucking-stop. That's my view.”

At another time, Bolsonaro declared: “Should you not wish to finish behind bars, all you have to do is not sexual assault, abduction or rob.”

Prison Facility Debate

But the possibility of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison high-security prison in Brasília has shocked backers, four of whom this week inspected the complex in an seeming effort to dissuade the supreme court from sending him there.

The senator, a senator from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was part of that quartet, claimed he predicted the elderly politician to be jailed in the coming fortnight and feared his location could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s acute digestive ailments – the consequence of a almost deadly stabbing during the 2018 political campaign – implied it would be risky to keep the ex-leader there. “His condition is extremely serious. He won’t be able to handle it if they send him to Papuda … It could be dreadful,” said the senator, who also worried about packed cells and the standard of inmate food.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas remembered witnessing cells accommodating 40 prisoners: “That’s practically one square metre per prisoner.

“We talked to the convicts and they grumble, unsurprisingly, of the terrible meals,” remarked the senator.

Supporters React

He is not the lone figure voicing opinions prior to the ex-leader's expected imprisonment.

Penning in a prominent daily, a different supporter, the former communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “brutal” end to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” time in office and alleged Brazil was about to experience “the largest political injustice in its past”.

“This is an injustice that eats away the hearts of countless Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.

Mixed Public Reaction

It is possibly correct considering the considerable support Bolsonaro maintains on the conservative side. Yet his anticipated jailing has also pleased the hearts of millions others who think he should be jailed for conspiring to stop the elected leader from becoming president – and additionally plotting to have him killed.

Congressman Otoni, a congressman for the incumbent leader's political party, commented: “Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to be placed in a hole. No one desires Bolsonaro to be sent in segregation. Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We wish him to receive respectful handling – but dignified care while incarcerated. He can’t persist being his personal jailer for his entire life.”

He observed how Bolsonaro supporters, who have long applauding the tough handling of convicts, had unexpectedly realized to their entitlements. “Recently has the conservative fringe – which has repeatedly argued that civil liberties were not for lawbreakers – opted to inspect a penitentiary to discover what conditions are truly like,” he said.

“He is a criminal,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he deserved “degrading, degrading handling”.

Possible Incarceration Conditions

Despite speculation that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which now contains about thousands of detainees, his more likely assigned facility looks to be a close jail for law enforcement and other “unique” inmates called Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

His potential cell are far more pleasant than those in the primary facility, although still a far cry from the opulence Bolsonaro had while living in the spectacular leader's home, around 12 miles away.

According to information, the room Bolsonaro could anticipate occupy in Papudinha is about 24 sq metres – about the dimensions of vehicle spaces – and contains a 130 square foot restroom with a water facility and a 12 sq metre terrace. “He could be allowed to have a TV and even a cooler in his room as long as they were provided by his loved ones,” information indicated.

Partisan Responses

Senator Lucas condemned the talked-about proposal to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “an act of revenge” on the part of the judicial authority who led Bolsonaro’s legal case and will rule on his fate in the {
