Although not quite at the identical stature as sparing festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven. Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood. “The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued since the commencement of a new presidential term. “Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.” The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was established to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House. The swine, provided by a local firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “6-7” – originating from a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently named “6-7” its top term for the year. A Future Secured This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release. “The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the holiday season,” said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message. “It embodies the character of Miami: joyful, varied, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Annually, we are proud to celebrate heritage and mercy in a way distinctively Miamian.” Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
